Barb’s beautiful batik
Last week we had the pleasure of catching up with local Waihi Beach artist Barb Young who these days can be found creating stunning Batik’s in her converted Boatshed studio. Barb is also a talented flax weaver and her flax plastic bag holders for the kitchen have proven to be very popular purchases at Off the Bench Studio.

Sue Edwards: Textile artist part one
Sue Edwards has recently moved to Waihi from Nelson and brings with her a lifetime of experience and talent in textiles, fabrics and collage. The Forager discovered her via another local artisan (to be profiled next week) who sells some of her wares. We are delighted and privileged to have her in our midst.
Sue is an amazing inspiration and has been featured in many exhibitions, had her own retail boutiques and continues to produce beautiful, vintage inspired items such as lush curtains, gorgeous cushion covers, collaged blankets, childrenswear, clothing from daywear to bridal wear and so much more.
Such is the broadness of Sue’s work and experience that we are going to post about her over two blog posts, this one being the first. Here we learn a little about Sue’s history and where she is at right now, in our next post in two weeks we will cover more of her past exhibitions and projects. We hope you enjoy getting to know Sue as much as I have!
If you are interested in contacting Sue direct about her work then you can email her here. And if you are in the Waihi Beach vicinity over Easter weekend some of Sue’s lovely wares will be availabel fro sale at Off The Bench in Wilson Road, behind The Porch Cafe.

Is it a bird, is it a plane? NO it’s a BOATERHOME
The exciting thing about foraging is that you are never sure what little treasure you are going to stumble across. The BOATERHOME and its inspirational creators Rod & Leonie are one such treasure. The forager couldn’t believe his eyes when he stumbled upon the BOATERHOME!

Inspiring Waihi artist – Tanya Edwards
Last week The Forager caught up with local artist Tanya Edwards in her gorgeous villa studio. Her talent and love for mixed media is very apparent as you will read and see below. It was awesome to meet you Tanya! Tanya Edwards Art on Facebook.

The ultimate food foragers
We recently visited Megan and Henri Saurat from BreadNZ who make the most divine range of artisan breads and pizzas including Sour dough and gluten free bread. Based between Waihi and Katikati they can be found at the Katikati market on a Friday evening and the Waihi Beach Market every second Sunday morning. Their food obsession spans their lifetime and they even lived on a remote tropical island for several months completely alone where their fulltime job was food foraging! Megan is a wealth of knowledge on the health and wellbeing benefits of growing and creating your own food and Henri is master breadmaker learning from a traditional french baker. Their bread is baked in a wood fired oven built by Henri. Their passion is teaching others to bake bread so if you have an interest in workshops such as ‘Breadmaking in a nutshell’ or ‘Wood Oven Magic’ be sure to book one of their workshops. Read their interview questions below and check out their website for more info – www.breadnz.com.

PS: We should also mention that Megan and Henri also sell the gorgeous portugese ovenware pottery in the images below…
Jasmin Sparrow the ever so talented clothing and jewellery designer
Jasmin Sparrow is a very talented, young, clothing and jewellery designer who splits her time between two locations: Wellington is where she is based at the moment with partner Oli and son Archie, and where she has lived since 2008. Waihi Beach is still however “home” and where Jasmin returns to visit her family, especially over summer when the beach is the best for swimming! We catch up with Jasmin at her summer workspace- Off the Bench, Waihi Beach.
Jasmin’s work has evolved over the last 5 years, and her range has expanded to include handmade jewellery and accessories, garments, and what started the whole lot off – her fabulous feathered hair braids.
A modern twist on natural materials, what makes Jasmin Sparrow’s pieces unique is her use of feathers; and when combined with her other talents of fashion design and metal working, we see a final product that is a charming mix of au natural NZ, and designer must-have, an inspiring combination!

Art, handmade jewellery, vintage ware and so much more
Off the Bench at Waihi Beach (behind the Porch cafe in Wilson Road) has been a frenzy of activity so far this summer. The rain earlier in the season has certainly been no deterrent for Waihi Beach shoppers. And now as we approach another long weekend Off the Bench is well prepared for the next wave of visitors.
Much of the jewellery is NZ handmade from up and coming jewellery artisans including Off the Bench’s owner Jayne Jolly who can turn bezzles, chains, findings, vintage collectables and leather into the most incredible wearable art. Dave Mangino our local Waihi leather larrakin has been pumping out wristlets, anklets, belts and dog-wear at an alarming rate, demand has been very high! There is also gorgeous art and woodwork by locals Fiona Coles and Benny Coles, original art on canvas by Yana Meech and so much more. If you haven’t experienced Off the Bench yet (and it is an experience) then you really must visit Waihi Beach this weekend and explore.

Benny’s Thai Fish Cakes
In our recent post about local artisan Benny Coles we promised you his favourite recipe – Thai Fish Cakes (Benny style). Not only can we provide the recipe but we also sampled these today (Benny presented us with a fresh stack) and they are incredible…
1 1/2 cups Basmati Rice
500g Fish (either tinned tuna or salmon or fresh fish)
2 spring onions finely chopped
2 green beans finely chopped
4tsps soya sauce
4tsps fish sauce
1/4 cup freshly grated ginger
2 garlic cloves finely chopped
2 eggs
zest of 1 kaffir lime or 6 kaffir lime leaves finely chopped
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp white pepper
1/2 cup fresh coriander finely chopped
1 finely chopped chilli (optional, to taste)
Cook the rice – it needs to be slightly sticky, not dry.
Beat eggs then combine rice, eggs and all other ingredients.
Make into patti shapes and either shallow fry or drizzle with oil and bake in the oven for 20 mins at 200 degrees celsius.
Serve with salad and home made aioli.
